Witch Balls
Mouth-blown spheres for window light, color and old protective symbolism.
Old form, new light.
A witch ball belongs to one of the oldest decorative glass traditions for windows and rooms.
Historically, witch balls were hung in windows, entryways and living spaces. Their mirrored surface, round form and colored inner movement were associated with old protective customs: light was caught, reflected and sent back into the room.
In European folk tradition, a bright glass sphere in the window was said to confuse wandering spirits, catch envy or the evil eye, and keep unsettled energy outside the home. By the 18th and 19th centuries, colored and mirrored glass balls had become familiar objects in cottages, gardens and shop windows: part talisman, part ornament, part small theatre of light.
Today they are collected as handmade glass ornaments with history. They keep the symbolic character of the old form, but speak mainly through material, color, reflection and the quiet presence of mouth-blown glass.
